Textured, Animated, Layered and 3D Fog!!

It's been a while since I posted because I've been stuck fixing graphical bugs for ages, but I finally have something new and sexy to show you. Upgraded fog!! The fog has has been upgraded in FOUR awesome ways:

1) Textured: Fog is no longer a flat colour that is applied, but instead is a nice textured effect instead. It looks cloudy and mysterious.
2) Animated: These clouds now MOVE across the map, as if a wind was blowing the fog.
3) Layered: Map makers can now set 2 types of fog. We have the normal view fog which increases in density the higher up you go, but we have a new "fixed" fog which stays the same regardless of where you are standing. Map makers can set a height for this fog to create cool and unique effects like I've got in the picture above.
4) 3D: The fog texture is 3D in the sense that the clouds appear to be floating up in the sky, rather than moving along the ground. This is cool because when you move the camera around the fog moves faster relative to the ground, futher adding to the depth of the game.

I'm only halfway through the fog and the picture above is just for testing, but I think some really cool effects could be created with this. Basically I chose to work on fog because I believe the biggest graphical improvements are things that affect the whole screen. Fog, specuarlity, shadows, ambience all bring the map to life and look ultra sexy. Map makers rejoice!

Ok I think I've finished this for now. Map editors now have the following options in the map editor:

Colour and density of view fog.
Colour and density of fixed fog, along with the height that it starts at.
Wind Velocity, which will determine the direction and speed that the fog blows. Looks really cool!

Here's the new view fog effect applied to Downtown. I haven't applied a fixed fog to downtown as it's a mostly flat map, but a map like Bridge or Asylum I will definitely apply it to.

This picture shows off the new fog and light effects, comparing Downtown from v1.08 to what I've done so far. Looks signficantly better I think! And I'm just getting started ;)

Yup, that shinyness is the specularity. And I think I did brighten the map a bit too, but I think that just makes it look better. One thing I noticed about lots of the dark maps is they have very little contrast.. they go from medium to dark, and the map overall just kinda looks flat and bland because of it. I mean Downtown was one of the brightest maps before and even that looks too flat and drab compared to the new lighting. I really think we should focus on maps with good strong contrast, with bright brights and dark darks, makes things look a lot nicer and with more depth I think.
